Toyota just announced it will be investing in a joint research venture between Stanford and MIT. The announcement was made today at a press conference. Toyota will invest a whopping sum of $50 million to the research.

The research will be carried out on self-driving Artificial Intelligence car tech. The research venture will be a 5 year collaboration between Stanford and MIT. The program will be coordinated by former Program Director for DARPA's Professor Gill Pratt, according to CNet.

Semi-autonomous technologies are gaining a lot of prominence right now. According to Pratt advanced driver aid is the easy part. The hard part is creating a smart machine that can react to stimulus and make complex judgments.

The machine should also be able to interact naturally and in concert with its human driver. Autonomous cars will require the AI to think its way through inaccuracies. The IA can also be useful in helping the human driver.

The collaboration will see Professor Daniela Rus of MIT's and Professor Fei-Fei Li of Stanford working together. Rus is the professor at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) in MIT.

Li is the director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL). Both individuals shared their goals are coming up with human centric intelligence. The AI program if successful can also aid the elderly while driving. It will help them to retain their mobility both inside and outside of the home.
