  • Mysterious Space Object lights up Bangkok Skyline

Mysterious fireballs of unknown nature lit up the Bangkok skyline. Some think that they were meteors. This led to fears of apocalypse among the locals.

What exactly it was remained a mystery for a long time. The mysterious object exploded over the skyline of Bangkok leading many people to fear that the end was near. Whether it was a meteor, a balloon or space debris is something which was only known later on.

The Net freaks went mad in the ensuing speculation about the phenomenon. It was morning commuters who saw the object of interest. The images caught in the form of video clips clearly show the object burning bright before vanishing without a trace.

Some say it is an asteroid. Others however said that it was a UFO. It burned up a 100 km above ground level. There are those who say it may have been a prank by some prankster. Thus it might be a burning balloon.

Thai society is supersaturated with superstition. Thus many thought it was a sign from God that showed that doomsday was near. However, the Astronomical Society declared that it was a “bolide”. This happens to be a rare form of exploding meteor.

A similar phenomenon took place in Russia in 2013. And that bolide weighed 10,000 tons. It had injured some 10,000 people in the process too. The Thai were lucky this bolide was not as big and that it had no effect on human life and limb.

The dashboard cameras in the cars that crowded the highways recorded the fireball from various angles. It was a close call alright. Had the fireball been bigger or fallen closer to home, it would have been mayhem of the kind hitherto unknown in the history of Thailand.

Several meteors fall close to the earth’s atmosphere each year. But the majority of them burn to cinders before they have a chance of reaching the earth and its inhabitants. The layers of atmosphere our planet possesses make for a protective seal of sorts.

Thus any meteor or asteroid that comes even close to earth simply meets up with so much resistance that it light up in a blaze of glory. There is even a very large crater in the United States where an asteroid hit many eons ago.

Other planets and satellites such as the moon have no atmosphere and thus are pockmarked with craters. This is rarely the case with earth and that is a blessing for which human beings ought to be thankful.
