First solo US icebreaker has ended its long journey at the North Pole. It was quite a trip alright.

A US Coast Guard icebreaker has after a long and arduous process found its way to the North Pole. This happens to be the first time that an American ship has reached the top of the globe.

The icebreaker was called the Cutter Healy and it had its original docking ground in Seattle. The Coast Guard Cutter HEALY (WAGB - 20) is United States' newest and most technologically advanced polar icebreaker.

USCGC Healy made it to the upper region on September 5th. The fact that most of the polar area is melting rapidly due to global warming means that valuable resources such as oil and minerals are there for the taking.

Many countries including the US of A have high ambitions of finding a treasure trove of raw materials in the loci surrounding the North Pole.

Currently, the human activity in the region is at a peak level. Such shipping detours like the Northwest Passage are being explored and used in the bid for lucrative markets of oil, gas and precious minerals.

The information brought to light by the Healy icebreaker will lend much-needed insight into how best to go about the exploration and excavation business. The nature of the habitat and striking a delicate balance between its conservation and exploitation is of the essence.

"As the Arctic region continues to open up to development, the data gathered on board Healy during this cruise will become ever more essential to understanding how the scientific processes of the Arctic work, and how to most responsibly exercise stewardship over the region," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The US has three icebreakers at present. But one of them is in a dormant state of disrepair. President Obama has promised the creation of a new icebreaker from scratch. This is to help the US further its interests in the Arctic region.

The competition has just begun to heat up and the United States is one tough country that is not to be left behind in the rewards that are at stake. This happens to be the fourth time that a US vessel has reached the freezing and frigid North Pole. It is an inhospitable climate that reigns in the environment that is to be found there.

The really amazing thing is that the ship made it to its goal unassisted. Many submarines have traveled beneath the frozen ice and re-emerged at the polar region. But for a ship to make it there on its own is the ultimate challenge that has been overcome.

The Cutter Healy is 420 feet in length and has a weight that is close to 16,000 tons. With a 30,000 horsepower engine, it can snap through ten feet of ice. The crew on board consisted of scientists and researchers who were busy examining the Arctic oceanic habitat for clues as to its geochemical makeup.
