Foxconn and Apple Reportedly Buying Sharp LCD Business gaining access to 4K Mobile Display

Apple's big manufacturing partner Foxconn is according to a report interested in buying Sharp's display business. Apple supposed to invest.

The Sharp display unit is doing great work, but it is a big financial risk for struggling Sharp. The latest highlight from the Sharp Display business is a the 5.5-inch 4K display that enabled Sony to unveil the first 4K mobile phone. Now Apple could get control over Sharp's LCD business and the 4K mobile display.

A report from Japanese Nikkei claims that sources said that Foxconn is has been in talks with Sharp since summer. The deal would give Taiwan's Hon Hai a majority stake in the LCD business. The report says that Apple is part of the deal and would make an investment.

Apple is already a customer of the Sharp Display unit. To bring it closer into the Apple supply chain makes sense for Apple. This way they are in control which future display technology is available for competitors.

In the case of the Sharp 4K 5.5-inch display, it appears that Sony got somehow an exclusive on this for some time. Apple could secure exclusivity on upcoming display technology. The iPhone next year is due for a display update. Apple kept the iPhone 6S equipped with the same display as the iPhone 6. The company only added the sensors for the 3D Touch functionality.

Apple already completely controls the CPU design, why not also control the display design and make it another thing that differences Apple from the competition.

Tomorrow the wait for the new iPhone 6S is over. The new iPhone goes on sale and it is expected that Apple is able to gain additional market share for iOS in the fourth quarter.
