VR Kit Is A competition for Google Cardboard from Microsoft

Microsoft is ready to take on Google's Cardboard with its VR kit.

Google Cardboard is a cardboard phone holder that is intended to utilize your phone to make a VR entertainment framework very cheap.

Microsoft now has a contender to Google Cardboard that has just appeared called VR Kit. The VR Kit hasn't been touted by Microsoft just yet, but it was spotted on a site promoting a Microsoft hackathon in Russia.

That hackathon will use the Microsoft VR Kit and will look like the purple clad cardboard box. It looks cleaner than Google’s box that is just an exposed cardboard.

It's additionally hazy if the VR Kit will hold devices other than Lumia phones. Apparently any device that is the same shape and size as the Lumia will work.

The hackathon event in Russia is commencing on October 17. Successful ideas from the hackathon will land the developers a VR kit to use to continue developing the idea.

There are three categories for the event including game, education, and best corporate apps. CSeparate winners will be picked in every category.

What will be interesting is whether Microsoft officially announces the kit at the event, and if it will detail pricing or release information for the general public and other developers.

Presumably, with its cardboard design, it may be available for people to print off at home for free.
