TiVo Bolt Fights for Attention

TiVo unleashed the TiVo Bolt with a unique design and 4K resolution. Do DVRs still matter in a Video On Demand world?

TiVo announced a new DVR. The TiVo Bolt starts at $299.99 and a $149.99 annual fee. In the purchase price the first year is included. Has a Digital Video Recorder still relevance in a video on demand world? Video streaming hardware sells for less than $30 and there is a big trend of cord cutting. TiVo does everything to stay relevant with the TiVo Bolt.

The Bolt has a bold design to begin with. The white colored box has a bend in the shape, making it look very unique.

TiVo is not ignoring the video on demand world. Streaming services like Netflix are integrated into the TiVo Bolt experience.

"The TiVo BOLT arrives at a time of piqued interest in both connected devices and commercial avoidance," said Tom Rogers, TiVo's President and CEO. "The clear demand of consumers is for a TV experience that quickly delivers them exactly what they want the instant they turn on the screen. BOLT is a game changer that will remind people of how they felt the first time they experienced digital recording."

TiVo highlights SkipMode as one of the killer features. SkipMode allows to skip over commercials. For some reason TiVo thinks this feature is unique. I owned a DVR in early 2000 that could do that. The ReplayTV DVR got killed by TV studios because of this feature. Dish Networks also offered DVRs with commercial skip features.

QuickMode is another highlighted feature of the Bolt. It allows to cut down the time of binge watching TV episodes. TiVo says that the audio stays perfect despite the faster playback.

"Bolt was designed to meet the requirements of a new generation of TV viewers," said Ira Bahr, TiVo's Chief Marketing and Retail Sales Officer. "Smaller form factor, 4K compatibility, single-screen integration of cable or over-the-air, plus streaming apps, the ability to take your content anywhere -- and for the first time, the ability to precisely jump commercial breaks at the touch of a button."

TiVo Bolt 500GB is available for $299.99, including a first year of annual service ($149.99 value), and TiVo BOLT 1000 GB is available for $399.99, with a first-year of annual service. TiVo Bolt will be available today at TiVo.com, BestBuy.com and Amazon.com, and in stores starting October 4, 2015 at Best Buy, Magnolia Home Theater and Magnolia Design Centers.
