The Met Gala 2016 will have a tech theme and Apple as its sponsor.

Update May 2: See Tim Cook, Jony Ivy and Steve Jobs' Widow at the Met Gala 2016.

Apple continues to drill its way into the high fashion world. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York announced the new theme for the 2016 Met Gala. The theme is “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology." This is the perfect theme for Apple and its Apple Watch.

Apple has approached the world of high fashion to promote the Apple Watch. The Met Gala 2016 will be the highest profile event yet that Apple will leverage to promote its wearables. The 2016 Met Gala is taking place on May 2, 2016.

The timing would be ideal to launch the Apple Watch 2. The first Apple Watch launched in end of April this year. If Apple sticks to the Spring schedule, the Apple Watch 2 will be seen on the wrist of select celebrities at the Met Gala 2.

Right now the Apple rumor mill is though pointing to a fall release for the next Apple Watch.

Apple is not just sponsoring the event, but Jonathan Ive will also be a co-chair of the Met Gala 2016. Other co-chairs include Taylor Swift, Idris Elba and of course Anna Wintour. The honorary chairs according to Vogue are Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada.

The Met Gala is known for celebrities going over board with extravagant robes. Last year Beyonce stunned in an almost nude robe. For the Met Gala 2016 it will be just enough to wear an Apple Watch Edition to be the star of the red carpet.

The Met Gala was known as the Costume Institute Gala and also referred to as the Met Ball. It is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. The Met Gala is also marking the opening of the 2016 fashion exhibit.
