There have been 23,000 of emergency room visits per year and they comprise people who got sick due to the nutritional aids they were taking.

Over 23,000 visits to the E.R. were caused by the improper consumption of dietary supplements. The research spanned a decade and it showed conclusive proof of many cases of the youth ingesting stuff that turned out to be harmful substances.

Most of those in the age bracket of 20 to 34 ended up taking these supplements. But the problem was that some of them already had CV disease. Thus the ergogenic aids and weight loss drugs did a lot of damage to these poor individuals who didn’t know any better.

These findings were printed in the New England Journal of Medicine. The trauma suffered by the victims of the diet industry was a little too close for comfort and the industry rakes in approximately $32 billion on a yearly basis.

That is a whole lot of money. The FDA and several other agencies have now begun paying serious attention to the sale of dietary supplements. What goes in your mouth besides food counts for more than was previously thought.

Greater accountability by the supplement makers is of paramount importance. And scrupulosity regarding the ingredients that went into the oral products is also of key significance.

Since supplements are not as rigorously examined by the authorities as patent medicine, they often manage to go undetected under the radar. The supplement industry bosses are adamant about their in-culpability though.

They claim that half of America uses their supplements without any deleterious consequences. The cases where complications occur are few and far between. In fact, they point out that all medicines that are not OTC stuff end up causing greater harm than so-called supplements.

Yet the hornets’ nest has been disturbed. There are examples of people arriving in emergency rooms with allergies due to the consumption of faulty supplements. The symptoms range from angina to fluttering heartbeat and from tachycardia to vertigo and vomiting.

Over 10% of these people require extended hospitalization. This matter must undergo some intensive investigation otherwise anything goes in a runaway world without responsibilities.

The health supplements that have come under the microscope include in their repertoire: Black Jack Energy, Hydroxycut, Raspberry Ketones and Xenadrine. The number of deaths due to these malfunctioning supplements were not recorded though. That is because they come under the dark figure.

The new study published today in The New England Journal of Medicine.
