Eddie Murphy will be returning to SNL but he will not be performing in the show as Bill Cosby for very genuine reasons.

Eddie Murphy has a whole existence of his own when it comes to the world of humor. Having done a major number of comedy movies, doing sketches on stage and on TV and even lending his voice to some of the funniest and most iconic characters in the animated world, it is beyond a doubt that Eddie Murphy is a brand name in humor.

Many might not remember but Murphy was also a regular cast member on SNL. The actor/comedian performed through a span of 90s. Many on the show would argue that he stuck around through some of the hardest times on the show. It was essential then that the actor decided to make an appearance on the show’s 40th anniversary.

While comedy patrons were excited about what Murphy might be performing, they were surprised to find out that he wasn’t performing on the show. He made a speech in which he thanked his fans and that’s all. Seem surprising?

Well, Eddie had his reasons. When he decided he was coming on the show, writers and producers hoped that he would do a Bill Cosby imitation. Many would reckon that no one could do a better Bill Cosby imitation than Murphy. Murphy refused however to impersonate Bill Cosby on the show.

Fellow SNL alum Norm McDonald revealed via Twitter Shortly after the program aired that he wrote the sketch poking fun at Cosby. Ultimately Murphy grew uncomfortable with the material and opted out the sketch because he didn't want to "kick a man when he's down."

Murphy himself commented in an interview with The Washington Post that he felt there was "nothing funny" about making light of the once beloved comic legend. He said that It was horrible. If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you're just hurting people. You're hurting him.

You're hurting his accusers. He said he was like, 'Hey, I'm coming back to SNL for the anniversary, I'm not turning my moment on the show into this other thing.' He also stated that he understood why the show wanted him doing the Cosby piece since it was such hot news these days. It didn’t feel right to him though.

Bill Cosby, hearing about Eddie Murphy’s comments, thanked and appreciated Murphy for his understanding and support.
