Nike chases the dream of the power-lace sneakers from Back to the Future since years. Now their latest version will be available in Spring of 2016.

Nike gave Michael J. Fox on Back To The Future Day a pair of 2015 Nike Mag Power-Lace Sneakers to try on. The video below shows him putting the sneakers on revealing that Nike only created half the functionality of the Back to the Future II Nike Mags. The ankle strap is not closing automatically, only the laces tighten on the push of a button.

This is a major disappointment in my opinion. Watch young Michael J. Fox put on the Nike power-lace sneakers in the Back to the Future II movie below and compare to that the video of Fox putting on the 2015 Nike Mag.

The power ankle straps are essential for the complete experience. Michael J. Fox struggles to put the strap in. It breaks the whole experience of putting on the power-lace sneaker as it still requires manual fiddling with a strap. This is not the future. And where is the lit up Nike logo? Maybe Nike will finally have a fully functioning power-lace sneaker in 2045, the 60th anniversary of the Back to the Future movie.

Nike believes in the power-lace core technology to find its way into sneakers for athletes at some point. Nike, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker said, “We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes. By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner.”

The 2015 Nike Mag will be a limited edition release. Nike will only make it available via auction, with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. The specific details on the auctions will be revealed in spring 2016.

Update:

Michael J. Fox showed off the 2015 Nike Mag on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He demonstrated the power-lace feature, but had the ankle straps already closed. The Nike logo actually was lit up on that pair of Nike Mags Fox was wearing on Kimmel. Watch below.
