The last few days of the month of October is when it will take place. It is the time for the final supermoon of 2015 to appear in the night sky.

October 26th is the date set for the peak of the supermoon. And it will be a last chance to see it before this year ends. Both professionals and those dabbling in the science of astronomy for fun will be buckling themselves up for the event. This will have been the third time a supermoon has shown its resplendence in the dark blue velvet with embedded diamond stars that is the sky.

However, this supermoon will probably not be able to hold a candle up to the previous supermoon. That one revealed itself in September and it was quite an occasion. The moon was not only in close proximity to the earth but it was a blood moon to boot.

Furthermore, there was an eclipse taking place at the same time. Supermoons are a rare occurrence that takes place when the moon is closest to the earth. This is called a lunar perigee.

The moon does not need to be a full moon to fulfill the criteria of a supermoon though. On October 26th, there will also be a closeness of the planets Jupiter and Venus. The supermoon will last into the wee hours of the dawn of October 27th.

This is the sixth time this year that a supermoon has graced the heavens above. It is indeed quite an exciting time for astronomers and skygazers to get their kit together for some skywatching. Usually the number of supermoons per year are five or six.

While this month’s supermoon will probably not be as bright as the previous one, it will nevertheless be more resplendent than the average moon that appears in the night sky.

The word “supermoon” entered the vocabulary about a generation ago. Erstwhile, the supermoons were called perigee full moons or perigee new moons.

The special thing about the supermoon this time around is that it’s the last chance to see one until October of 2016. Thus one should not miss the chance no matter what. The Native Americans of the US term such a moon the Full Hunters Moon for the reason that the animals that were hunted by the Indian Tribes were at their peak in terms of body volume and numbers around this time.
