It has been estimated that climate change will wreak havoc on 250,000 people annually 15 years from now.

The figures are very dismal in the panoply of horrors they lend a vista into. By the year 2030, at least 250,000 people will be dying from infections, heat strokes and malnutrition per year thanks to global warming.

The only way to offset this disaster is via taking the climate change bull by the horns. That requires collectively moving out of our comfort zone. The World Health Organization has labeled climate change as the core issue of the present century. It is indeed a case of now or never. The level of urgency is very real.

The global leaders are trying to entreat the Third World countries to reduce their rates of pollution. But this is not an easy task. They ought to take a look in their own backyard since some of the developed countries are the worst offenders in this regard. Climate change is already spreading disease and misery on a hitherto unheard scale.

Everything from floods to heat waves are creating chaos on an unprecedented level. The air is more like smog and the water contains acid rain. As for the food supply, it too has been affected thanks to the crop crisis. Sanitation and hygiene for many human beings are at an all-time low.

Three years ago, seven million unfortunate people succumbed to the deleterious effects of air pollution. They breathed their last. The very air we breath is becoming poisonous with each passing minute.

The UN will be hosting a Climate Change Conference next month with Paris to be the venue. This landmark conference might end up passing a few laws that will curb CO2 emissions and help forestall the rampant global warming.

The issue at hand is the saving of lives of common citizens on a global level. Methane emissions will have to be stopped. Carbon from the exhaust pipes of vehicles needs to be dealt with and all this will not happen within a day.

Nothing works in an immediate scenario. It takes time and patience. Meanwhile, the alternative is too horrific to even contemplate. 250,000 deaths per year by 2030 from malaria, diarrhea, oppressive heat levels and starvation are what the writing on the wall says in loud and clear words.

It is a case of make or break and do or die. So significant steps will have be taken no matter how unpalatable they are to the forces of progress for progress’ sake.
