A Skye terrier named Charlie beat out 1700 other canines to win the National Dog show’s first place.

Thanksgiving was a happy affair with man’s best friend at the National Dog Show held in Philadelphia. 1,700 dogs accompanied by their owners participated in the competition for the top title but only one came out victorious above all.

The 4 and a half year old Skye terrier named Charlie from Ocala, Florida, won the coveted Best in Show title at the National Dog Show. The pooch, who walked with handler Larry Cornelius, has now nabbed 79 Best in Show titles in his career and had over 200 1st places finishes in the terrier group.

It came as no surprise that the well-decorated dog whose formal name is GCH CH Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie beat out on the competition. Charlie came out on top defeating an Ascob Cocker Spaniel, a Newfoundland, a bearded collie, a smooth coat Chihuahua, a Scottish deer hound and a French bulldog owned by Patty Hearst for the top prize.

The judges were proud of naming their winner. Best in Show judge Elizabeth Sweigart commented that Charlie is in impeccable condition, hard-muscled with a beautiful coat. For his breed, he really shows personality.

“He is a lovely example of the breed,” said Best in Show judge Elizabeth Sweigart. “He is in impeccable condition, hard-muscled with a beautiful coat. For his breed, he really shows personality.”

Show dog guru and National Dog Show host David Frei called Charlie a great winner. He said that not only a great Skye terrier and a great show dog, but Charlie is fun for everyone. He makes us all smile as we look at those big ears, his beautiful coat, his long and low shape, and his happy personality.

“A great winner! Not only a great Skye terrier and a great show dog, but Charlie is fun for everyone. He makes us all smile as we look at those big ears, his beautiful coat, his long and low shape, and his happy personality,” he told People in an email.

Frei's cohost John O'Hurley added: “The moment he entered the ring, I turned to David and said, 'Wow…!' 'Heads and tails' above the competition.”
