BMW i3 Coming in July 2016 with Higher Energy Density Battery

The battery will arrive by June 2016 and is expected to be a 94Ah battery.

In July 2016, BMW will refresh its i3 electric car battery. The BMW EV will have a higher energy density battery. The current i3 model by BMW is a 60 Ah battery. It consists of 8 x 2.7 kWh packs cells.

Each cell contains 12 x 3.75 volts with a nominal capacity of 21.8 kWh, 360 volts. About 18.8 kWh from the battery is usable. The incoming battery is expected to be a 94Ah battery. The battery will have a higher energy density.

The new battery will provide the BMW i3 with a range of 120 miles. Right now the EPA has rated the i3 with having a mileage of 81 miles. The EPA will test the new battery after its release to confirm whether it delivers 120 miles. The actual rating will then be issued by the EPA after testing the i3 battery.

BMW has even indicated current owners can retrofit the new battery. The cost and the process involved have not been revealed yet. The details will be revealed close to the market launch.

According to BMWBlog, the new battery will be used in both the BMW BEV and the REx. BMW is moving towards the goal of having a 200 miles electric vehicle in the coming years. The i3 will soon get closer to the range of the Nissan Leaf with the new battery.
