Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2015: Who is Behind the Wings?
  • A One-on-One Interview with the VS Creative Director

Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou is the woman behind the wings. The VS Creative Director reveals all the how creativity becomes reality on the VS catwalk

The 2015 VS show will air on television today. It has its Angels who bring the lingerie brand to millions. And it is all in the form of a panoramic visual display that is sexy and sensual to boot.

VS had broken the Internet before and it might do so again. Some of the most outright flamboyant lingerie gets showcased on the show. Even lingerie that has diamonds and rubies encrusted on it is part of the ensemble.

Some of the most sizzling of pop stars such as Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift and Maroon 5 have graced the show with their presence. Actually the show was caught on camera last month, but it will feature on the boob tube for the first time today.

By now VS has become a part of Western culture and civilization. The show helps generate more than the usual amount of sales as women who want to look attractive buy the stuff in scads.

Meanwhile, the Creative Director of VS, Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou was interviewed by CBS regarding how she manages to plan the whole show and she responded with some very salient points.

In preparation for the VS Fashion Show, she goes to hook up with various designers and artisans. Yet it remains her singular vision and worldview that shapes the events into focus.

It has been more than half a dozen years or so since Sophia has been overseeing the beautiful visuals that are stuck onto the even more beautiful bodies of the models and Angels. She makes sure that each and every ensemble is ready to be worn in front of the millions who shout and blow wolf whistles. It is basically a tough job alright.

The wearable art pieces she helps create have a certain structure and function that serve the models well. When Sophia was asked concerning the source of her inspiration, she said: books, art, films and virtually anything that is a part of nature and culture.

Each theme she selects is carefully constructed in the form of feathers or wings or a host of other background elements. And whereas two years ago, Degas’ ballerinas were the main theme, at another time it was Gustav Klimt’s gold section.

It all depended upon mood and was a matter of pure impulse and instinct not to mention a dash of intuition. That was the way art worked in the mind of the artist.

Sophia’s personal favorite themes have been the Firework and the Circus ensembles. A lot of hard work goes into each final creation. It takes grit and courage to think up the sort of designs and artistic patterns that the rest of the world just enjoys on a regular basis.

It almost reminds one of the making of sausages. If you saw them being made, you would not want to eat one. But since most of the creative work happens behind the scenes, hence the final product is palatable to the audience.

It is an exciting and absolutely amazing process though. From start to finish, the very scheme of converting space and colors and shapes into models of wings and stick-out patterns on the Angels’ delicate and devastating figures is almost magical in nature.

It is like at one point the ensembles take on a life of their own. And to imagine, that in the beginning there was a blank space where the finished product should have been.

Then the hairstyles, makeovers and 10,000 tips that are culled to make the girls even more kissable is not something that hangs on trees. It has to be found via a thorough exploration of our present culture.

But Sophia said that once all the vital ingredients are combined in the proper manner, like a secret recipe, the whole comes out in perfect form from the individual elements. There are often last minute snags that get in the way.

But then what else is Sophia for. She irons out the kinks in the process as they occur so that nothing is left to chance. The beauty and horror of the things that fit and those that come unhinged are part of the process.

The wings are an all-time favorite and the feathers that go on to make them are treasured by Sophia. All the while, she has to expect the unexpected. It simply comes with the territory. And finally when the girls step out into the limelight to drive the audience gaga, it just all seems to dovetail into one huge fanfare.

Yes, it is a sort of madness since all art disturbs, yet what extreme beauty and aesthetic bliss is engendered via the show. Meanwhile, Sophia’s vision will reach viewers on CBS today. She sure has some surprises up her sleeve for the millions eager to feast their eyes on the models and artistic displays.
