Angela Merkel is Time's Person of the Year 2015

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is Person of the Year 2015.

Time magazine's editors selected German Chancellor Angela Merkel as 2015 Person of the Year. Merkel defeated ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi and Donald Trump, who have been part of the shortlist.

NBC is hosted a poll and initially Donald Trump was in the lead with over 45%, earlier this week. At poll close ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi had over 60% in the poll and Trump is distant second with 18%.

The editors of Time magazine did not select based on a poll of course.

"In a year where world leaders were tested all through the year, no one was tested the way she was, over and over again," TIME Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs told Savannah Guthrie on NBC's Today. "The threat to European peace and security really fell to her."

The magazine picked Merkel for the way she managed the economic crisis over the summer, and the way she's currently handling the refugee crisis and terrorism threat looming over Europe.

Germans might beg to differ, that Merkel is handling everything well.

She has stepped up in a way that was uncharacteristic even for her," Gibbs said. "She's been a very long-serving leader, the longest-serving in the west. She controls the world's fourth largest economy, but this year she really was tested in how she would respond to some of the most difficult challenges that any leader is facing in the world."

Angela Merkel is the first woman since 1999 that has been selected as Person of the Year. In 1999 Time changed the title from Man of the Year to Person of the Year. Overall, Merkel is only the forth woman that Time selected as Person of the Year. Via Time.

Ebola Fighters have been TIME's choice for Person of the Year 2014. In 2013 it was Pope Francis.
