Lady Gaga Gets Woman of the Year Award, Calls Music Industry a Boys Club

Lady Gaga delivered a very emotional speech inspired by her own experiences in the music industry and received encouragement by all in attendance.

The ceremony for the Billboard Women in Music 2015 was held on Friday with an array of female musicians and artists in attendance along with more artists from the music industry. Female artists in the U.S. were honored in the event and the Woman of the Year award went to Lady Gaga.

Lady Gaga arrived on the event in a white crop top with matching pants and white and gold heels. The singer was introduced by her mother Cynthia Germanotta.

The star, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, made it on stage in a red pantsuit to perform a powerful version of her latest tune, "Til It Happens To You," on piano backed by a small string ensemble.

The song showcased her gifts as an artist, as well as her devotion to issues of importance to her was about sexual assault which she wrote with Dianne Warren for The Hunting Ground documentary about college campus sexual assaults.

She then received her award and Lady Gaga used this time in the spotlight to deliver a speech that was powerful, real, emotional and inspirational. She said that it was really hard for women in music sometimes.

She called the music industry a ‘fucking boys club’ that the female artists just can’t get into, People reports. She noted that women provide a wisdom to music that is very unique and special.

Women have a perspective no one else can have because they bear life, she said and because they go through things no one else goes through. She said that it’s right and everyone is equal.

She added that she tried for so long. She just really wanted to be taken seriously as a musician for her intelligence more than her body ever in the business.

She said that female artists don't always feel like that when they are working with people that believe that you have musical background, that you understand what you're doing because you're a female.

Her words received a lot of applause from the audience who agreed with her. She also received support and encouragement from her family and her fiancé Taylor Kinney.

She also addressed the lyrics and the story of ‘Til it Happens to You’ in word when she said that we really care about the issue of campus rapes and raising the social awareness about trauma and violence in young people's lives.

So she wanted to use her moment is the spotlight as an opportunity to continue to spread the message and the movement for young people to raise their voices for their stories and come together to be strong.

Gaga said her mom takes that prize for being her Woman of the Year. She said that her mom always takes care of her through the ups and the downs no matter what and nothing ever changes no matter how her career changes her family stays the same.
