He was an abstract artist par excellence and his efforts showed in his masterpieces. Ellsworth Kelly left this world at the age of 92.

The greatest abstract artist of the 20th century is no longer with us. In the baby boomer generation that followed the Second World War, he left a remarkable influence on the art of America.

Ellsworth mixed solid shapes with bright colors. The plans for his paintings were European in origin. Their inspiration was real life which is our base and to which we must eventually return.

He died at his residence at the age of 92., reported the NYTimes. The death was announced by Matthew Marks. The man was a dynamo and a live wire. His level of originality touched the peaks of sheer genius and he reached heights of fame.

As an amateur bird watcher, he took a great deal of design elements from the colors and flowing feathers and bodies of avians. Also he repeated the camouflage patterns commonly found in the army.

Finally, European surrealism a la Salvador Dali were his last source of inspiration. While his storehouse of art history which he kept in his mind was encyclopedic, he never took much notice of his contemporary art or artists for that matter.

During the time when Abstract Expressionism was at its peak in Yankeeland, he lived in France and didn’t care much about this trend either. Then he came to America and settled down.

He had his own eccentric style where he explored unlikely avenues and mixed the most radical elements that broke with all forms of tradition and convention.

This lent his art a fresh angle which appeared wonderful to the admirers of his works. He was born in the United States and studied painting for awhile. Then he left for Paris which was the “in” thing in those days. But he would return invigorated and ready to let loose his genius upon the world.

He was more of a loner and liked to enjoy his solitude far away from maddening crowd. This sensitive soul visited churches and gazed at the beauty of their spirituality.

He also met extraordinary individuals from whom he gained all sorts of ideas and experiences which he would later on integrate into his works of art.

His abstract paintings show the city in the background as an important motif. Slowly bit by bit his fame spread. He now belongs to the ages as a master painter and inspirational source for future artists and designers. He will be long remembered into the future.
