The third quarter of 2015 was dominated by full high-definition (FHD) panels which took 21% of the smartphone display market for the year, and this is mainly because of the active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) panel being embraced by Samsung among other top smartphone manufacturers - CENS writes.

Considering the higher demands from Chinese smartphone makers and how well Apple’s iPhone 6S Plus had performed in the market, the shipments of FHD panels rose significantly because of its ability to display 1080p images. IHS has it on record that AMOLED screen displays took 18% of the smartphone market in terms of unit shipments for Q3 2015.

Based in South Korea, Samsung adopted AMOLED display to differentiate its Galaxy smartphones for a number of years, and the excellent color performance, on-cell touch, lighter and slimmer forms of the phones influenced other smartphone makers to want to try AMOLED, putting Samsung Display in the position where it must begin supplying the technology to others within the market.

Since the second half of 2015, smartphone brands such as Huawei, Lenovo, vivo, OPPO, Meizhu, and Gionee among others have adopted AMOLED screen displays in their products; and Google Nexus 6P, Microsoft Lumia 950XL, Meizhu Pro 5, and BlackBerry Priv now rely on AMOLED screens for their flagship products.

“2015 will be a banner year for AMOLED as the technology will soon be included in high-end smartphones from many other companies,” said David Hsieh, senior analyst for IHS Technology. “The simpler structure and better picture performance of AMOLED screens may even encourage Apple to consider adopting the technology in the future.”

Apple’s iPhone S6 Plus influenced smartphones with 5.0-inch-and-larger displays to achieve unit shipments of 247 million units in the third quarter, while smartphones with less screen size have their shipment drop to 156 million units.

For 5.0-inch smartphone panels, shipment rose from 93 million in second quarter to 104 million in third quarter of 2015; and for 5.5-inch smartphone panels, sales increased from 65.5 million in the second quarter to 79.8 million in the third quarter of 2015.
