The Zika virus is moving up north rapidly. If things persist in this manner it might enter the US via the standard routes of mosquitos, tourism and private intimacy.

It’s spreading upwards from the Land of the Amazon River. Few people have heard of it in the United States. Zika is contracted from the bite of the Aedes mosquito. Basically, it is a flavivirus that is a cousin of the following diseases: Yellow Fever, West Nile, Chikungunya and Dengue.

The most recent diseases to enter US territory include Chikungunya and Dengue. They are evil diseases that cause misery and pain. Dengue even kills if it is contracted by the patient more than once in a row.

Zika has the especially nasty feature of causing microcephaly. This is a condition in which baby’s skull and brain are too small. And these infants go on to develop ten thousand developmental impediments. Zika began its epidemic journey in Uganda. It was named after the Zika Forest.

And it was first identified and isolated in Nigeria in 1968. There were clues as to its presence in other African nations as well as India and Malaysia. About 8 years ago, it was found to be rampant outside these areas.

From 1947 to 2007, the Zika virus has come a long way and caused much human suffering along the way. Yap Island also became a centerpoint of this epidemic, according to Forbes.

Zika sure spread with speed. Chikungunya spread to Europe in 2007 while it entered the USA about two years ago. In 2013, 28,000 individuals became ill by the disease in French Polynesia.

And now Columbia has started attracting Zika like a disease magnet. A thousand patients enter hospitals on a weekly basis. Brazil was enveloped by Zika in May of 2015. Ahead lies the US of A.

The northwards route the disease is taking may be forestalled for awhile but it cannot be stopped. Already less than a dozen Latin American countries are in the grip of this virus.

Puerto Rico is the latest conquest. Mosquitos that cause this disease in the first place obviously do not respect these man-made borders. Cases of Zika may appear soon enough in California and Florida. It is just a matter of time. And the bothersome mosquitoes are not the only route of transmission.

Sexual intercourse between members of different cultures is another way it can be spread. The treatment includes: rest and relaxation, fluids such as mineral water and fruit juice and analgesics that ease the chronic pain.

Avoidance of mosquito bites is the #1 prevention tip. Finally, travel restrictions will need to be instituted in order to stop the spread of this pesky disease into US territory.
