Apple has registered some pretty curious top-level domain names that might give a hint as to what they are focusing on next. According to Mac Rumors, the tech giant has registered apple.car, apple.cars, and apple.auto in December 2015, but they haven't been activated yet.

Now, before we get too carried away, the domains could feasibly be related to CarPlay.

However, there have long been rumors that Apple is working on an electric car. Multiple reports over the last year or so have said that Apple is working with a very secretive team to create an electric vehicle that will be available in 2019 or 2020.

There is mounting evidence that this is exactly what Apple is doing - they are at least exploring the auto industry. They have a secure Bay Area testing facility that works with connected and autonomous vehicles. The company has also met with the California DMV to review some of the self-driving vehicle regulations. All of these wouldn’t be required if it was just some technology that would go along with cars that already exist.

Apple has recruited some of the best engineers from other talented auto manufacturers, including Tesla, Ford, GM, Samsung, A123 Systems, and Nvidia. Electric motorcycle startup Mission Motors even ceased operations after losing employees to Apple.

Anything they are doing is in the earlier stages of research, though it is likely that they are moving at a clip thanks to these registered domains.
