Golden Globes 2016: Winners, Highlights, Red Carpet and More
  • Golden Globes 2016: The Fame and the Fury

The Golden Globes 2016 occurred with a lot of fame and fury. There were winners who took it all and there were many happening moments that made the night one to remember.

Ricky Gervais hosted the Sunday's 73rd annual Golden Globes Awards. He is not known for his politeness. Gervais started off with skewering Mel Gibson.

He said that he would rather be with Mel than Bill Cosby. Now, Cosby has been accused of giving drugs to over 50 women in his past and then having illicit sex with them.

Mel fired back by saying that he meets Gervais every three years and that too when he needs a colonoscopy. Gervais came with the rejoinder that he hardly knew the meaning of the word “sugar tits” which Mel Gibson said to a police officer upon being stopped on the road while he was in his car.

Gervais didn’t even spare Bruce Jenner who later on became Caitlyn. As a transgender, she got a lot of applause from Gervais but with a proviso. He spoke of how Caitlyn didn’t do much for the sake of women drivers.

This was in reference to the car accident that Bruce was involved in. Gervais poked fun at another transgender individual in the film industry.

He spoke about Tina and Amy and said that he was getting paid like them to wisecrack. But unlike him, they must be taking home the money by sharing it.

Later on he said that his three Golden Globes served very important functions. They were used as a doorstop, a weapon to hit burglars with and as a decoration piece alongside the bed he slept on. Kate Winslet got an award for her role in the biopic Steve Jobs.

When Gervais called Matt Damon on stage he let loose a volley of insults regarding his friendship with Ben Affleck. The result was that Damon was not amused and his seething anger showed in his demeanor.

There was a light moment when a copycat skit was performed where the Miss Universe blunder that took place a few weeks ago was parodied. When Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer came on stage, Lawrence asked Amy what they called her. Did she have a name?

Amy replied in the affirmative that they usually called her a word for the female organ of reproduction. Then Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell entered the scene. They were wearing goofy glasses which had 2016-shaped frames. They delivered their dialogue in very serious and conservative tones which made the audience laugh even louder than before.

One of the highlights of the show came when Lady Gaga won an award for her song for a series. Even Leonardo DiCaprio was quite surprised at her getting an award. When Denzel Washington got an award he said that he was speechless.

Jim Carey came on stage and gave his usual delivery lines of cheap jokes. Meanwhile, Leonardo DiCaprio got an award for his movie The Revenant which is all about revenge. He said it was an honor to receive the award.

Sylvestor Stallone got an award for his role in the movie Creed. The best comedy motion picture was the Martian. Zendaya the Disney Girl wore a red rose dress to the awards in which she looked like a crimson vamp.

As for Jennifer Lopez, she wore a yellow dress which highlighted her super sexy body. She came on stage with Casper Smart. Amy Schumer wore a black and white ensemble which made her look like a milkmaid.

Leonardo DiCaprio said at one point that his film The Revenant was about “survival, it was about adaptation, it was about the triumph of the human spirit, but more than anything it was about trust.”

Jennifer Lawrence thanked the director of Joy by saying that he made movies as if he didn’t even care if people saw them or not. She qualified this statement by saying that she meant those words as a compliment.

Taraji P. Henson won an award for the TV series Empire. The writer of the script for Steve Jobs said that “I thought I had as much chance of winning the screenplay award as I had of winning best actress in a musical”.

When Sly Stallone won an award he declared that “I am going to try not to get emotional because I am the sum total of everyone I have ever met. And I am lucky I have absorbed some of it.”

Eva Longoria made a joke about how she was Eva Longoria and not Eva Mendes. Then another actress joined in her chorus by saying neither of them were Rosario Dawson. Will Ferrell at one point scolded the onlookers for laughing like idiots.

He said “can you stop the laughter? You people are coming off as real buttholes.” Tom Hanks had the honor of presenting the Cecil B. DeMille award to Denzel Washington. He said if there was an artist par excellence among them it was none other than Denzel.

Morgan Freeman gave the award for the best director to Alejandro Inarritu of The Revenant. Melissa McCarthy was present at the Red Carpet Event wearing a black leather gown. Jane Fonda donned a creamy white ruffled blouse with a form fitting skirt at the event.

As for Katy Perry, she wore a light pink dress that had spaghetti straps at the shoulders. Jennifer Lawrence was the best dressed in a bright lipstick red blouse and skirt. She had a diamond brooch on her neck too.

Lady Gaga presented herself as a Marilyn Monroe in a satin dress with curves at every corner. Kate Hudson was drop dead gorgeous in her sexy siren dress that consisted of a strap on her breasts and a sarong around her waist.

One of the biggest highlights of the show was when Amy Schumer called herself the “C” word which was funny but very impolite. The show was a bright and dazzling congregation point for the stars and starlets of television and the big screen. It will be remembered for a long time to come.
