It is really happening, but not in a way fans hope for.

Every few years, there are whispers about a "Friends" reunion. This time, they are true - but there is a bit of a twist. One of the most popular comedies of all time is getting a reunion of the actors in a special for NBC twelve years after they took their final bow.

The long awaited announcement was made during the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Pasadena on Wednesday, according to the LA Times.

The event isn't a reunion episode for Chandler, Monica, Rachel, Ross, Joey, and Phoebe. Instead, it is a reunion for Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer. In fact, the event isn't even for the Friends. Instead, it is a tribute to Friends director James Burrow, who also help with many other iconic comedies like Taxi, The Bob Newhart Show, and Cheers. He has 1,000 episodes on television, 15 of which are Friends.

Don't get your hopes up too much, however. The cast might not actually appear together. One of the biggest reasons that a Friends reunion hasn't happened is because the actors have been very difficult to get at the same time.

However, there is a bit of hope because NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt was asked if the network would have all six in the same room. “I’m hoping all six will be in same room at same time; I’m not sure we can logistically pull it off,” Greenblatt told reporters.

The special will air Sunday, February 21, 2016.
