Google Creates Spatial Audio With Its Cardboard SDK For Immersive Sounds

Nathan Martz, Product Manager for Google Cardboard has posted an announcement detailing the efforts of the company to bring immersive sound quality to users of its Cardboard SDK for Unity and Android devices.

To create the best of spatial sound quality, a user must have a smartphone that comes with headphones, and a Google Cardboard viewer. The Cardboard SDK will produce the immersive audio quality in virtual reality apps that immerses the user in spatial sounds that heightens music and sound experiences.

With the Google Cardboard SDK utility, you can hear spatial sounds from all directions just like an airplane moving overhead.

Engineers were able to integrate this sound feature into modern smartphones by optimizing the SDK for mobile CPUs, that is SIMD, and this delivers the audio in real-time on a different thread so that the audio processing does not occur within the primary CPU.

Also, the SDK makes it possible to determine or control the fidelity of each sound produced in the system. This means a user can enhance certain sounds and reduce the value of others.

For unity developers who desire to start off on SDK’s latest audio features, there is a detailed range of components available for producing soundscapes on Android, iOS, Windows and OS X. And for developers focused only on Android, they can now have access to a simple Java API that will enable them create simulating virtual sounds in the desired audio environments.
