Virgin Galactic and Y-3 are about to design some pretty nifty space clothes.

Virgin Galactic and Y-3 will be joining hands to design some space clothing. Y-3 is a venture started by Yohji Yamamoto in conjunction with Adidas. Since the past decade or so, it has been working to produce luxurious sports apparel.

Y-3 will make flight suits for the astronauts and pilots of the future. Advanced fabrics will be used in the materials for the garbs. Special techniques will be employed to construct the suits. The commercial spacelines of the times to come will feature such spacesuits.

The Head of Design at Virgin Galactic commented on how “our evolution into a fully functioning spaceline presents unprecedented opportunities to create original designs in support of our unique customer experience.

Together with the incredibly talented team at Y-3, we will explore the potential to create innovative apparel and accessories – both for our staff and for our pioneering customers – that is appropriately functional and fit-for-purpose, is thoughtfully and elegantly crafted and is fulfilling and fun to wear and use.”

This is the first time that clothing has come to the fore in the race for space. The spacesuits will be form-fitting and very sleek. Made from Nomex Meta Aramid, the space suit is similar to kevlar.

The bulletproof nature remains intact. Comfort is also a factor that has been taken into consideration. And the boots are very cool too. Made from natural leather and the selfsame material mentioned a few sentences back, the boots have traction ability.

They also have heel inserts which act as shock absorbers. Rough flights will not be so rough anymore. The space apparel will receive a favorable reception from the agencies which will employ them in their repertoire.

“Our design teams’ shared values will doubtlessly result in the creation of some extraordinary, special and highly treasured products, and we look forward to sharing their development stories as Virgin Galactic steps closer to commercial operations”.
