German startup Burning Heads develops roofies detector.

A German startup revealed plans today to develop a gadget that detects date rape drugs in drinks. The DrugCop device is placed in a cocktail or beer glass and notifies owners if their drink has been compromised.

The current DrugCop prototype looks like a high-tech stirrer. It has a small computer and sensors looking for typical date drugs including Roofies (Rohypnol) and Liquid Ecstasy (Gamma hydroxybutyrate).

Date rape is a serious problem not only on the American college campus, but also in other countries including Germany. The victims, mostly young women, have a very hard time to proof that they got date raped. The drugs are vanish from the body within hours and the victims have almost no memory of what happened to them.

The founders of Burning Head want to help people to protect themselves to avoid becoming a victim. The new gadget keeps drinks in constant observation. As soon as relevant substances are added to the drink, an alert is given.

DrugCop will be launched on the crowdfunding platform Sparksters on February 15. The funding goal is a modest 130,000 Euro ($142,000). The company wants the crowd to contribute not just money but also ideas. The DrugCop gadget is still in early stages and the team hopes to get input from supporters to get the design right.

The team that founders Mirko Karafiat and Sven Schlotfeldt assembled include engineers, who have skills in chemistry, optics, and electronics.

In 2014 a group of students raised attention with invention of nail polish that detects date rape drugs. The Undercover Colors startup is still working on the product. The raise is on. Which roofies detector will be on the market first.
