  • Straight Outta Compton Gets Oscar Snubs but Race is Not the Reason

Straight Outta Compton’s Oscar snub had nothing to do with racial issues according to the Oscar members but a remembering one.

This year, it was an all white Oscar nominations announcement again. Among 40 nominations, there were no nominations for other races.

Jada Pinkett Smith, Spike Lee and other actors have already pioneered the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite trend. The actors are claiming that the racial discrimination has led to minorities being left un-nominated once more.

The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences has already tried to make remedial efforts by releasing an apologetic statement and a movement to add more diversity to the slots from next year.

The movie that was really a shoo-in for best picture nomination with almost $160 million, the best reviews from the critics and critical acclaim from so many institutions, was Straight Outta Compton.

According to Ice Cube, the member of the N.W.A; on whom the movie is based on, says that the goal of the movie was to tell the story behind the scenes and capture the essence of what really happened apart from the stereotypical conceptions.

The film in essence captured everything that the producers and the directors wanted to capture. The film was well received among youngsters which led to the movie being a box office hit. So why did the movie not get nominated?

According to Academy members, the no nomination status of Straight Outta Compton has nothing to do with race. It is first and foremost the concept of acceptance of the trend, reported EW.

The trend of the streets and the music scene which is very much the reality but most Academy members do not approve of the content due to which they did not watch the movie. So they never watched the movie and they never voted for it.

For other Academy members that did watch the movie, they accounted two things for the no nomination status of the movie. According to one member, the movie was released sometime in August.

That is a long time ago considering that the Academy members saw a wide array of movies recently out of which many were nominated.

He said that at the time of voting, most movies that come to mind that the members have recently watched. Straight Outta Compton simply slipped out of mind when voting for the movie.

Another reason is the balloting for the Oscar nominations. One Academy member claims that many people would have voted for Straight Outta Compton. However, the movie might have been on the third or the fourth place or even lower at 5th.

In a balloting that only considers first choice, the movie almost stood no chance to make it to the top. Many have advised the Academy to reconsider the voting system because the Oscars are the awards that people look forward to for excellence. The issue is not a racial one in opinion of the Academy members but other technical issues like screenings and voting scheme.
