The Luddite awards were given to people like Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk for their scare tactics regarding AI. Even Bill Gates was among the recipients of the award.

Elon Musk or Stephen Hawking would hardly count as anti-technology agents and neither would Bill Gates. Musk virtually produced the electric vehicle. Stephen Hawking is famous for what is known as TOE (Theory of Everything).

As for Bill Gates, he is responsible for putting a computer in every household. Did you know that all three of these gentlemen have received a Luddite award? They are members of a coalition that is known for its alarmism regarding AI.

The legitimate question is how such eminent personalities that are responsible for some of the technological advances of the past generation could be called Luddites.

A Luddite is a person who hates technology and tries to sabotage the technocrats by destroying machines. Well, the reason may be that they use fear as a factor in their arsenal of weapons to scare off people from the consequences of AI.

These three gentlemen were among 10 people who received the 2015 Luddite awards, according to CNet.

The Luddites were 19th century weavers and textile workers in England who engaged in violent protests against the use of machines in their line of work. Opposition to technological innovation was the name of the game.

While Elon Musk would barely make it into the Luddite category, he does lend the community of Luddites his support inadvertently.

Both Musk and Hawking declared AI to be the worst existential threat facing mankind. With such leaders of technology biting the hand that feeds them, how will funding for AI increase in the future?

For one thing, Musk believes that beyond a certain point machines will turn aganst man. They will be a source of trouble instead of peace. Musk even went so far as to say that the hazards of AI are worse than the dangers of nuclear power.

Hawking mentioned that the long-term effects of AI were not good. The two seem to think that the very future of life is at stake due to a takeover by machines.

This however is a very unlikely scenario which suits the sci-fi genre but not reality as we know it. Finally, the last straw came when Bill Gates joined in the chorus and took Elon Musk’s side.

He said that he didn’t understand why the majority of people were not concerned about the consequences. It is not what these leaders of the modern world are saying. It is how they are saying it that is problematic. Their tone of voice is downright scary and gives ordinary people the creeps.
