Spike Lee says that he and his wife will not be attending the Academy Awards this year but appreciates the Academy taking steps for diversity.

Spike Lee announced at the Governors Ball where he received the honorary award for his services to Hollywood. He thanked the Board for the award but announced there and then that he as well as his wife, will not be attending the Oscars this year.

That was way before the #OscarsSoWhite movement. However his boycott settled in quite justly with the list of actors boycotting the Oscars this year due to the lack of diversification among the nominees.

The Academy of Motion Picture and Science issued a referendum that included some historical changes to make sure that diversity will never be a problem in the Oscars nominations again.

The decisions, said to be made effective following next year, is to ensure that more members from different races will be included in the Academy.

Women will compose over 40 percent of the membership and inclusion of three members to the 51 Board of Governors. The members will be chosen by President Cheryl Issac Boone who has been the most active in implementing these changes.

Spike Lee commented following these changes that he was glad that the Academy was taking necessary steps to address this problem. He said that it was time that the Academy did something about the diversification issue.

He confirmed that he will still not be attending the Oscars this year. He said that the Academy had not taken any actions and the changes were in theory now.

He had however given his wholehearted word after discussing it thoroughly with his wife. He said that he and his wife had decided not to attend the Oscars.

They will not go to the Oscars and they won’t go against their word. It was a principle that they will be following and at the end he is sure he will end up on the right side of history.

He will be attending the NBA game at the Madison Square Gardens scheduled between the Miami Heat and New York Knickerbockers.
