The DeLorean is the only car ever made by the DeLorean Motor Company and is also known as the DMC-12.

The DeLorean is the only automobile made by the DeLorean Motor Company. The DeLorean Motor Company official logo is ‘DMC’. The DeLorean was also originally known as the DMC-12.

The DeLorean was sold in America from 1981 to 1982 and was relatively popular. The Delorean Motor Company closed down due to multiple issues.

However the car was truly immortalized when it was featured as a time machine in the 1984 film ‘Back to the Future’ film. Since then the car has become an iconic pop culture American symbol. By 2007 it was believed 6.500 DeLorean cars still exist.

It all started with John Z. DeLorean who was born in 1925 in Detroit. DeLorean earned his Master’s from the Chrysler Institute and was instrumental in creating the Pontiac GTO. In 1969 DeLorean became the head of Chevy but quit by 1973 due to ethical and business issues.

The John Z. DeLorean Corporation was then created in 1974 to create John. Z’s dream car. By 1975 the DeLorean Motor Company was established. The same year Composite Technology Corporation was also created to develop.

The purpose of Composite was to develop new construction materials for the car. According to John. Z’s vision the dream car was supposed to be fun to drive, safe to operate and long-lasting.

By October 1976 the first prototype of the DeLorean was delivered by William T. Collins. The design was then worked upon by engineer Colin Chapman and famed designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.

The DMC-12 was created and John Z. DeLorean settled on Dunmurray, Northern Ireland for the factory site.

A whopping $175 million was required to build the company. Most of the funds were provided by the British government to mellow down the sectarian violence.

The factory opened in 1981 but the first 70-80 cars were useless. The cars were unfinished and parked along the fence of the factory. Additional correction facilities were made on the United States East and West Coasts to fix completed cars.

By 1981 most of the production problems were resolved and the DeLorean was sold with a 12 month warranty. During this time more than thousands of orders for the DMC-12 had been issued on books. A single DeLorean was being sold for $25,000 in the US.

However the company was facing cash flow problems by then and was put into receivership by the British government in 1982. It led to John Z. pursuing illegal means to come up with the cash.

John Z. was arrested during a DEA drug bust in October 1982. The company subsequently filed for bankruptcy due to drug trafficking charges. John Z. was found Not Guilty in 1984 but production had stopped long before.

In 1983 KAPAC sold the remaining parts from the factory. Approximately 9,200 DeLorean DMC-12s were produced from January 1981 to December 1982. Most of the DeLorean were created in 1981 and carried the VIN number ending with BD000500 to BD007199.

In 1985 the DeLorean was immortalized when it was featured as a time machine in the Back to the Future film. The car was featured in all the sequels of the film starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd.

In 1995 Stephen Wynne became the chief of the DeLorean Motors Company. Wynne has since been selling refurbished DeLoreans for $45,000 to $55,000 from Texas.

On the 27th of January, 2016 the company announced they will again start production of the DeLoreans. The DeLoreans will once again go into production after a long break of over 34 years.
