In its bid to make upcoming Super Bowl 50 the most memorable and most-shared NFL game ever in American history for decades to come, Verizon has made a $70 million network investment to triple its 4G LTE wireless data network capacity in the Bay Area and throughout northern California.

The Verizon network upgrade will enhance web browsing, video streaming, social media posting and many more years after the event, establishing Verizon as the most reliable wireless network in the Bay Area and beyond.

To this end, over 100 Verizon staff had been working for close to 2 years to boost network performance across 10 major areas from San Francisco to Santa Clara, and in many NFL and player hotels as well as in three major airport areas. The team has been able to –

• Build 16 new area cell sites;
• Install 75 small cells;
• Deploy for the first time a patented antenna system to reach the lower stadium seats;
• Increase peak downlink speeds;
• Boost capacity by adding 37 XLTE systems to existing sites; and
• Complete preparations to deploy 14 mobile cell sites in high traffic locations.

Come to think of it – Verizon is fielding its own team to on Super Sunday. A dedicated team of 100 technicians and engineers have been deployed to manage and monitor network operations in real-time in San Francisco and within and all around Levi’s Stadium.

According to Brian Mecum, vice president, Network for Verizon Wireless, "We do this because we anticipate that this will be the most 'shared' Super Bowl. A better wireless network matters when it comes to capturing and sharing life's greatest moments."

Meanwhile, in Santa Clara where the Super Bowl will be taking place, the Verizon team has been able to –

• Installed a small cell network serving Levi's Stadium that increased capacity by 75 percent inside and outside Levi's Stadium. Increased coverage to the Stadium Parking lot and surrounding areas.
• Developed, patented and deployed first of its kind, proprietary technology to bring additional capacity to the lower stadium seats.
• Added six new cell sites in surrounding area.
• Added 29 small cells.
• Activated seven Cell on Wheels (COWs) mobile cell sites to serve the stadium and NFL and City events

In San Francisco, Verizon has added 10 macro cell sites to boost data capacity and coverage while also activating seven Cell on Wheels (COWs) across the city. Transportation capacity at Oakland International Airport has been tripled, and hubs at San Jose International Airport have been enhanced.
