  • Mazda may produce a next generation turbo-charged rotary engine!

The engineers at Mazda are reportedly working on a possibility of a high-revving rotary engine.

Mazda is allegedly developing a next generation rotary engine. All reports indicate the engine will be a turbo warrior. The next-generation rotary engine with be turbo-charged. It will have an unorthodox configuration made famous by the Japanese brand’s RX cars.

The cars with the configuration include the RX-3, RX-7 and RX-8. Previously the rotary-engine sports car by Mazda had the naturally-aspirated engines. The new engine in development will most likely be turbocharged.

Tetsushi Marutani is the drivetrain and powertrain assistant manager at Mazda. According to Marutani, they think a rotary with some turbo or compressor would be good idea.

He further stated a rotary in his opinion requires more torque at low speed. So if a small compressor or turbo is used it would help with the torque.The comment was made while talking to

So far Mazda has not revealed if and when a new rotary engine would be revealed. A fact such as the power of the new rotary engine is also a mystery.

However Mazda confirmed they are busily working on a new rotary engine concept. The new rotary engine concept may be revealed in 2017 or 2020. Since it will be the 50th and 100th anniversary of the Mazda rotary engine and the Mazda Company respectively.

Sources have reported the new Mazda engine may have a twin 800cc (1.6-litre) rotary. The rotary would be pumping out more than 300kW. Mazda has promised they will surprise with new technologies and systems.
