  • Half Mile Wide Asteroid could Trigger Small Ice Age on our Planet

A half mile wide asteroid could trigger a small ice age on our planet were it to strike anytime.

A small ice age of sorts would be the result were a 0.6 mile wide asteroid to hit the earth. A novel study has corroborated this fact. The collision would send up soot and dust into the atmosphere.

And this would cause average temperatures to go down by 8 degrees Celsius. The overall effect would be one of extreme severity. As for the world, it would go into a dark, freezing and dry phase.

The era that would ensue would be a very cruel one. It would not please the senses. Firstly, a nine mile crater would be formed and whole plumes of dust would rise into the air.

If the impact does not occur in a desert area, the fires that will start could spread smoke on a scale hitherto unheard of. This black gaseous atmosphere would remain intact for at least a decade.

Sunlight reaching the earth’s surface would be reduced by 20%. The 8 degrees cool-down would be similar to a mini ice age.

The rainfall levels would go down till half the precipitation is left. Convection is also lost if this scenario ensues. With this blanket enveloping the planet, the ozone layer would be further depleted.

However, massive extinction would probably not occur. For this to be a reality, the asteroid would have to be ten times as big as the one being postulated.

NASA has stated very clearly that there is no need for irrational fears regarding an asteroid striking the earth anytime soon. Such a case would be one of needless alarmism. Normally, things continue in their steady state of inertia through the river of time.

People like science presenter, Brian Cox have spread rumors to the effect that we earthlings are in danger of being wiped out by asteroids. He has even gone ahead and said that there is in fact an asteroid with our name written on it.

Brian believes that only a few months ago the earth barely missed being hit with a big one. Another gentleman (a former astronaut) has stated very clearly to that our existence on earth is rather like playing a sort of “sick cosmic roulette”.

NASA is trying to reassure people regarding these growing catastrophe theories. But the human mind is emotional and tends to wipe out reason in favor of fears and passion.
