The World's Cheapest smartphone comes to the Indian market on Thursday.

The Freedom 251 smartphone is the world's cheapest smartphone and set to stir up the Indian smartphone market. The Freedom 251 has a price of 251 Rupee, which is about $3.7 USD.

Update March 19: $4 Freedom 251 Sales halted, rebranded Adcom Ikon 4 controversy arises.

The Freedom251 features a 4-inch QHD IPS screen 1.3Ghz quad-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, up to 32GB via SD Card, 3.2MP rear camera, .3MP front camera, 1450 mAh battery, and 3G connectivity. The $4 smartphone runs Android 5.1. The smartphone comes pre-loaded with apps including Women Safety, WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, Fisherman, Farmer, Medical and more.

The Freedom 251 is made by Ringing Bells, a company founded in 2015. India is a huge mobile marketing with a fast growth pace. India is the second largest mobile phone market behind China. A $4 smartphone will bring mobile phones to much more Indians that live on low incomes.

How can Ringing Bells offer such a cheap Android smartphone? One of the reasons is the support of Modi's government. India's government has a history of bringing low cost digital technology to the Indian people that cannot afford regular priced hardware.

There is not much known about Ringing Bells and how they are able to sell a smartphone for less than $4. Some reports say that shipments will start in June time frame. This means there are four month between pre-order and release. The company has though already released a 2,999 Rupee smartphone named Smart101 a week ago.

The new Freedom 251 smartphone will be formerly launched by tonight by Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar, which gives the whole thing more credibility. The final proof if a $4 smartphone is real will come in June when the first devices are in the hands of consumers.

The Freedom251 starts to go on sale on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 6am on the Freedom251 site.

Apple's iPhone 6S costs 54,990 Rupee. The Freedom 251 is 220 times cheaper than the iPhone.
