It is something that fans have been worried about for a while now, and it has happened. Fox has renewed Bones for a 12th and final season, according to US Weekly.

However, there won't be the standard 22 episodes, but rather 12 episodes to wrap up the long-running crime procedural. The show, which stars Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, has been a favorite for many fans who loved the relationship. After the news broke, they took to Twitter to thank the fans.

"As sad as it is to know something you have loved doing for 11 years will be ending, I am so glad we will have the opportunity to end it well," Deschanel, 39, wrote. "Thank you for the most loyal, dedicated and kind fans in the world! We couldn't have done any of this without you!"

Boreanaz, 46, tweeted, "Thank you Fans. Above and Beyond."

The show started in September 2005, and is currently airing the eleventh season, which will end soon. Bones was one of the very few shows to not get a renewal during the TCA winter press tour in January, which seemed to seal its fate. Additionally, there was also some fighting behind the scenes.

"Really not sure about Bones," network exec Dana Walden said at the TCA event. She added that Fox would be sure to give the show a proper sendoff: "We've got such a loyal viewership, and those viewers deserve a very satisfying ending, so we're trying to be very sensitive about that."

Bones returns to Fox on Thursday, April 14, at 8 p.m. EST.
