Whether we admit it or not, men naturally think their manliness and masculinity is defined by their sexual prowess and ability to sustain an erection for as long as they care; and while this may be partly true, many men suffer from a form of erectile dysfunction or the other, leading to unsatisfied sexual experiences.

Whatever your experience is, researchers from Texas A&M Health Science Center have revealed that impotence or erectile dysfunction is not part of growing old – regardless of the fact that 30% of men over 70 years suffer erectile dysfunctions, while 22% of men over 60 years of age suffer the same experience.

The researchers identify 5 main physical and psychological causes of erectile dysfunction in men –

i. Medical conditions: Researchers point out that underlying medical conditions such as unobserved heart disease and other cardiovascular factors like atherosclerosis – the thinning of blood vessels in the entire body, could lead to erectile dysfunction. Diabetes, chronic kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, Peyronie’s disease and others have all been linked to erectile dysfunctions.

ii. Prescription or OTC drugs: Prescription drugs or over-the-counter drugs could interfere with certain functions of your body if they are taken on a regular basis. Drugs for high blood pressure, antidepressants, and antihistamines among others have been found to affect blood circulation, hormones, and body nerves in manners that cause impotence.

iii. Emotional disturbances: Ruined relationships, financial distress, workplace challenges, depression, anxiety, guilt, fear of sexual failure, and low self-esteem have all been linked to inadequate sexual fulfillments.

iv. Poor lifestyle choices: Being overweight, active smoking, alcoholism, substance abuse, excessive sugar and fat-food content make people vulnerable to erectile dysfunctions. But replacing these with regular intake of blueberries, radishes, citrus foods and other natural foods rich in flavonoids help reduce the risks of erectile dysfunctions.

v. Physical injury: Exercise is good, but it must not be too intense as to cause injury to your lower half since this could impact on your sexual capabilities. Whatever injury affects your waist, groin, head or any vital aspect might affect you and cause erectile dysfunctions among other things.
