New Opel Astra Named Car of the Year 2016 at Geneva Motor Show

A jury of 58 journalists from 22 European countries awarded the car with 309 points at the Swiss show.

The 2016 Geneva Motor Show has named the new Opel Astra as ‘Car of the Year 2016’. It makes the new Opel Astra the winner of the most renowned award in the auto industry.

The award was rewarded by a jury of 58 automotive journalists from 22 European countries. The jury gave the Opel Astra a total of 309 points. The runner ups Volvo XC90 received 294 points, while the Mazda MX-5 received 202 points.

The trophy for ‘Car of the Year 2016’ was presented to Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. The award was presented by COTY president Hakan Matson.

The awarding occurred on the eve of the first press day at the 86th Geneva International Motor Show. The Opel Astra emerged as a winner from a field of seven COTY finalists. The original contenders included 40 new cars ranging from sporty roadsters to premium limousines.

According to Neumann, Astra represents the start of a new era at Opel. The victory as ‘Car of the Year 2016’ shows they are on track. Neumann further stated it is an honour for them to receive such a prestigious award from leading automotive journalists.

The new Opel Astra comes in a five-door and the Sports Tourer version. Both of the versions are made on new and lightweight vehicle architecture.

The cars are powered by next-generation diesel and gasoline engines. This is the fifth time Opel has won the ‘Car of the Year’ award and its last win was in 2012.
