A huge space shuttle fuel tank that weighs 66,000 pounds is headed for Los Angeles courtesy of NASA which has donated the interesting object.

It is the last one of its kind. The fuel tank of the space shuttle Endeavour weighs 66,000 pounds. When the space shuttle was in LA way back in 2012, it was missing this fuel tank.

The space shuttle normally rides on top of this fuel tank when it goes on its peregrinations into space. The external tanks detach from the shuttle body during flight and burn up beyond the point of launching.

The museum directors were satisfied with a fake fuel tank but at the last minute NASA decided to comply and sent a last spare one to LA. The only problem was that it was so huge that getting it from New Orleans to LA would be a headache of the highest order.

The fuel tank stood as tall as a 15 story tenement. By the end of March though, this transportation of the fuel tank will have been an accomplished fact.

The tank is an orange monster that has been labeled ET-94. It will cover a long journey to the Science Center where it will be displayed alongside the Endeavour.

The humongous fuel tank will travel by sea following a tortuous path. It will go through the Panama Canal. Also it will be slowly dragged through the streets of LA, according to LATimes.

Someone said that it was a one-off move. The planning and management of the trip will involve many engineers, experts, workers and members of the police force.

The company that will be handling the whole process is performing such a large task for the first time. It is a unique act that will require careful measures and the greatest precaution.

While the tank is larger-than-life in size, it is also delicate in its makeup. A thin later of foam surrounds its external body. It must not strike anything solid during the course of its journey to be displayed in LA.

A special truck will be employed for the passage of the tank through the streets of New Orleans. This tank will be hauled from the truck to a barge using a very special technique.

Once it is on the high seas it will be gently pushed by a tugboat. The journey has already been mapped and every detail of the trip has been pre-planned to ensure prompt delivery of the over-sized fuel tank.
