There has been a lot of buzz about whether or not this happens, but it looks like it just might: Sony Music is reportedly going to drop producer Dr. Luke from its roster. They will be backing out a year before his contract will expire. The label is planning to completely end its relationship with the songwriter, real name Lukasz Gottwald, who allegedly emotionally and sexually abused Kesha throughout their time together, dating back to when she was signed at 18.

Dr. Luke and Sony Music were teamed together to battle against Kesha for more than a year in court after she filed a suit in 2014 against the producer and Sony to get out of the contract that required her to make 3 more albums with Kemosabe Records, which is owned by Sony and headed by Dr. Luke. Until she does that, she is not allowed to release music anywhere.

Last month, a judge denied her request to stop that contract.

Many celebrities and singers have come out publicly in support of kesh, including Lady Gaga, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Fiona Apple, and Taylor Swift.

Dropping Dr. Luke would be beneficial to Sony, just because of how much controversy there is about the producer. Add in the fact that some of their most popular artists, like Adele, are fighting against him, it is time for it to happen. Dr. Luke is the fifth most chart-topping producer and it just a few singles behind George martin to be the sixth most chart topping songwriter of all time.

However, even if Sony does cut ties with Luke, it likely won't do any good for Kesha. She might still have to work with Dr. Luke.

“[Kesha’s] contract belongs to Gottwald's company, Kasz Money, which made a separate deal with Sony's RCA/Jive; Sony reportedly can't release her from the deal even if its executives wanted to,” according to the LA Times. However, Dr. Luke will have a lot less money without Sony, and he might choose not to fight the case.
