The month of February broke temperature records on a global level.

The month of February which just passed us by awhile ago, broke previous records as regards the level of warmth. A century of global temperature records during this particular month were smashed.

This led researchers to label this spike in temperatures as a shocker. They have said that it is an emergency that the world is facing, according to Guardian.

NASA data shows that in February, average global surface temperatures were 1.35 degrees centigrade warmer than during the period between 1951 and 1980. This is a greater margin than has ever been seen previously.

An earlier record was noted down in January and it was 1.15 degrees centigrade higher than usual. NASA’s date was somewhat of a stunner. February was the most surprising of months.

It is indeed a reminder that our polluting ways will only wreak havoc on a massive scale. Unless we are careful, this trend could spell the doom of all animal and plant species not to mention mankind on this planet. Now we are being catapulted towards a 2 degrees rise in global temperatures after the pre-industrial era.

The 2 degrees rise is a danger signal. It ought not be surpassed otherwise we are in big trouble. The goal for now is to limit the warming trends to not more than 1.5 degrees.

Climate change is normally gauged over months and years not to mention decades. 2015 broke the records set in 2014. The difference was dramatic since the year 1850.

However, 2016 will probably be another record-breaker of a year. This is the first time that the record is being broken three years in a row. The director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Prof. Gavin Schmidt, spoke the word “Wow!” upon seeing the temperature during the month of February.

As his tweet reveals, last month was indeed a special time though not in a good sense. It is a sort of climate crisis we are in right now. The times we are living in are absolutely ths first time the earth is facing such a series of temperature swings.

The stuff is worth worrying about. In fact, we ought to do something about it. We may be nearer our limits than we think.

The word “hazardous” comes to mind when we ponder the question of climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions are responsible for all this. Giving them up would mean putting the brakes on all progress. So alternative energy sources will have to be found.
