Sony PlayStation 4.5 4K Rumored

A new report based on developer sources says that Sony will release an new PS4 with better graphics optimized for virtual reality.

Sony smells big business with the PlayStation VR. It totally makes sense for Sony to steamroll the competition on just on price but also on performance. The Sony PlayStation VR system is the most affordable to own. Today Sony announced the $499.99 PS VR bundle that contains everything you need to use the PS VR in full with your PS4 console.

The only argument Oculus and HTC have is performance in terms of higher resolution and refresh rates. A new report says that Sony is going to fix that soon with a new Sony PlayStation console dubbed PS4.5 or PlayStation 4K.

Kotaku's Patrick Klepek reports that his developer sources told him that the new PS4 would support 4K resolution game play. The PS4 can already output 4K for video but not for game play, which requires much more processing power. Other Kotaku editors heard the same rumor, making it more likely that this is in the works at Sony.

The Sony PlayStation 4 dropped in price $350. A new PS4 with graphics performance that can match those of $1,000 PC could be sold for $500 and would be still a bargain.

There are no details on how close Sony is to release the new Sony PlayStation 4K. Holidays 2017 would be though a good timing. At the same time Sony could release an improved Sony PlayStation VR headset with increased resolution, refresh rate and field of view.

The current Sony PlayStation VR CUH-ZVR1 include 5.7-inch OLED panel with 1,920×RGB×1,080 resolution offering 960×RGB×1080 per eye. The supported refresh image refresh rates are 120Hz and 90Hz. The field of view is about 100 degrees.

Microsoft has been pondering to make a graphics improved Xbox One. Microsoft so far has though made no announcement of a Virtual Reality solution for the Xbox One. Sony has currently the upper hand in the console war with the PlayStation VR launching in October.
