Today, March 20, 2016 is a special day. It is the first day of Spring aka Vernal Equinox.

It is the first day of Spring. The Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere is the eagerly awaited event that gives everyone a good feeling about winter being over soon.

On the Vernal Equinox the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night are almost equal. The so called Equilux, when day and night are exactly the same has taken place around March 16 depending of your location.

PBS's show "It's Okay To Be Smart" has a great episode explaining the whole Vernal Equinox topic including why there is a difference between day and night on the Equinox, March 20. In short the reason for it is the earth's athmosphere acting as a lens.

Besides the geeky science behind Vernal Equinox, the important thing is that Spring is coming. Google celebrates today with a First Day of Fall 2016 for the Southern Hemisphere and a First Day of Spring 2016 Doodle for the Northern Hemisphere.

On Vernal Equinox falls also the Persian New Year, which is an ancient Zoroastrian tradition celebrated by Iranians and Kurds.
