Arctic Sea Ice Levels Hits Another Record Low
  • Sea Ice Levels in the Arctic are at an All-Time Low

The sea ice levels that have been reached in the Arctic are at an all-time low. Besides this it seems that the Arctic has an effect on other places around the global village.

It’s been a relatively warm winter and so Arctic levels of sea ice have hit a record low. NASA and another institute noted down this phenomenon and reported it for the awareness of the public.

The sea ice in the Arctic is in a state of agitation. This is typical of the time around the beginning of the spring season. In fact, this time around it has been even lower than last year’s figures.

March 24th was the date when the largest extent of sea ice floated about in the Arctic. It covered an area of 5,607 million square miles. The data from 1980 to 2010 was 6.04 million square miles.

This figure is way ahead of what it was in 2016. One of the experts spoke of how he had never seen such a warm and topsy turvy winter in his life. The warmth and muggy atmosphere was a constant. A shrinking ice cap is crucial for many reasons.

Arctic ice and snow send back the rays of sunlight towards the sky where they came from. This aids in the cooling of the planet. When the ice melts away, the oceans do the job of absorbing the sunlight.

This leads to global warming and the ice further melts from the poles. The process sort of undergoes a feedback loop. As the ice in the glaciers and ice sheets melts in the Arctic, there is an accompanying rise in sea levels worldwide.

This automatically creates chaos along the coasts of the maritime cities around the world. The situation gets even worse thanks to the expansion of the Arctic waters due to the warm conditions.

Then there is the permafrost in the Arctic region. This is permanently frozen soil and it has twice the carbon trapped in it than there is in the climate. As it undergoes a meltdown, massive amounts of carbon dioxide and methane are released.

These make survival of several life forms on the planet a tough proposal. The planet’s temperature and weather go haywire thanks to this SNAFU.

While many tend to play down this condition of emergency, in fact it is very serious and has dire consequences. What happens in the Arctic could lead to havoc in Miami. This is the naked truth though many would like to take an ostrich-like head-in-the-sand approach towards it.

“In places where sea ice has been lost, those areas of open water will put more heat into the atmosphere because the air is much colder than unfrozen sea water,” Francis said.

“As winter sea ice disappears, areas of unusually warm air temperatures in the Arctic will expand. These are also areas of increased evaporation, and the resulting water vapor will contribute to increased cloudiness, which in winter, further warms the surface.”
