A new study shows that eating pulses and lentils such as beans, peas and chickpeas may promote weight loss and lower cholesterol levels significantly.

Consuming a serving of pulses and lentils each day may have immense benefits for an obese and hyperlipedimic person. A weight loss of half a pound was the desired result of eating such healthy foods as beans, peas, chickpeas and lentils.

The paper was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

This study is based on previous research that points out the salubrious effects of consuming pulses on a daily basis. Not only did subjects feel more satiated but they also lowered their cholesterol levels in the process.

Although pulses provide immense benefits, they are hardly consumed by the majority of Canadians. Even those who do eat them, consume less than the recommended amount that is necessary for reaping the nutritional benefits.

To include this superfood in your diet would be the best way of conquering obesity and high cholesterol levels. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has dubbed 2016 as the International Year of Pulses.

The study involved 21 clinical trials in which 940 mature men and women participated. They lost about a pound each over a period of a month and a half.

All it took was a single serving of pulses a day. Also no efforts were made to shave off the excess calories from other harmful foods. The thing is that pulses have a low GI.

That means that they are broken down slowly in the gut. Also they can replace some of the proteins in the diet as well as the harmful fats. It is an ugly truth that 90% of dieters fail in the end. The weight comes creeping back and ultimately one ends up gaining some instead of losing it.

The culprit is untimely hunger pangs and intense cravings which bother the obese individual until he or she must consume something substantial or else face the depressing reality of an empty stomach that rumbles in discomfort.

Pulses on the contrary increase feelings of fullness by a full 31%. This leads to a lessened intake of other deleterious foods. Also cholesterol levels are lowered by 5% which cause the symptoms of CV disease to undergo a remarkable reduction.

To lose weight and maintain fitness levels is a hard job. It requires discipline and eternal vigilance. While the weight loss associated with this new find is minimal, it is a promising start. Similar superfoods when combined in a healthy and frugal diet will lead to the shedding of pounds in obese individuals.
