A new laser cloaking device may aid us humans in remaining pretty much hidden from extraterrestrial life forms.

Astronomers at Columbia University have suggested that human beings may conceal the earth from aliens via laser cloaking technology. Any advanced alien life forms that exist out there and that would like to colonize the earth and enslave human beings would thus be thwarted in their plans.

The paper was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Even someone of the rank of Stephen Hawking has warned that we are not doing ourselves any favors by contacting aliens in outer space.

The problem lies in the fact that any other advanced alien civilizations that might lie on other planets will probably be trying to contact us using similar methods.

A dip in the light when a planet passes in front of its star is the usual technique employed. That is to find out whether conditions necessary for life to flourish are present on the planet.

These are termed transits and they are the standard method used by the Kepler Mission and other space projects to search for earth-like planets around other solar systems.

Up until now, Kepler has detected 1000 such planets that have earth-like properties. The fear that aliens may be trying to contact us for nefarious purposes is not very far from the truth.

Our planet lies in the optimal zone where the sunlight and presence of water are just ideal for life to prosper and burgeon. Hawking says that a visit from aliens to earth may be just like the European invasion of the Americas.

The effects would be devastating. However, the astronomers at Columbia University have said that by masking the transit region using controlled laser emission, any possible aliens on the lookout for our planet may be discouraged.

The laser would be directed towards the likely spots in the universe where the aliens exist. When turned on, the laser would compensate for the dip in light.

By merely shining a 10 megawatt laser for a 10 hour duration per year, the light that is reflected from our star and reveals our whereabouts will be eliminated.

Also the signals emitted by biological activity on our home planet could be switched off by the laser cloaking. It is an intriguing thought that just like we are searching for alien life forms in outer space, they too are in search of us.
