  • Artificial Intelligence may still have a lot to Learn from the Power of Human Intuition

It may be that computers can beat human beings at chess and other games. Yet humans are still better than AI at games involving quantum physics.

Computers are light years ahead of humanity. They are the true test of technology which surpasses its human-all-too-human creators. Yet there are still a few fields of endeavor where us puny humans are able to trump computers.

AI cannot do everything human beings are capable of. Quantum physics is one such area of influence where human beings snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

A video game was set up where gamers had to compete with the computer to tackle an atom in quantum mechanics. Surprisingly, the gamers beat the computer many times in a row proving there superior talent in this particular case.

The study was published in the journal Nature.

In the case of quantum mechanics, you need intuition and that is something only humans properly possess. Computers don’t know anything about intuition.

So our AI cousins have a lot to learn from us about this very human and irrational impulse called intuition. It is more like a hunch or a chance happenstance.

Scientists have tried to create quantum computers although it is a difficult proposal. Matter behaves in quirky and strange ways at the micro-level setup. Quantum computers can have a wide range of applications from cryptography miracles to driver-less cars.

However, it is still quite a hard thing to wrap one’s head around. Someone once said that if you were not confused regarding quantum physics, then you hadn’t understood it at all.

This might seem to be a strange saying, but apparently it captured the Alice in Wonderland world of quantum physics. It was bizarre and weird at one and the same time.

In case of quantum physics, intuition is in and rationality goes out the window. While classical physics operates at the macro-level stage, quantum physics is purely on the level of the small scale universe.

It is an uncertain world where literally anything goes. Such things as Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle and Schrodinger’s Cat rule the roost in case of quantum physics.

The movements of atoms is one thing that the scientists have not been able to get the hang of. Players that played an atomic game with a computer won more times than the computer.

It seems where the law of chance or probability rules, humans are kings of their castle. They are comfortable in this sphere. AI can do anything but it still has a long way to go as far as intuitive thinking is concerned.
