Lip surgery is the hottest trend right now. More and more people are opting for lip implant and a record number of people in U.S. underwent lip implant surgery last year. According to the data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more than 27,000 people went under the knife to get lip implants in 2015, making it the second fastest growing facial surgery in United States since 2000. Dermarbrasion is the only procedure that is climbing even more rapidly than lip surgery.

“We live in the age of the selfie, and because we see images of ourselves almost constantly on social media, we’re much more aware of how our lips look like.” Dr. David Song, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons said in a statement.

Lip implant surgery in which silicone implants are inserted into the lip has increased 48% since 2000, meaning at least one person is undergoing the procedure about every 19 minutes.

Lip injections, which include Botox and soft tissue fillers, also rose steeply last year and reached to nearly 9.2 million. That is an increase of more than 1,000 percent since the year 2000.

“Lip implants have been around for quite a while, but new technology is taking the industry by storm,” said Robert Houser, a plastic surgeon in Westerville, Ohio. “That's why we're seeing such growth in implant procedures.”

The currently used implants are more soft and flexible than previously ones. All it requires two small incisions in the corners of the mouth and a tiny instrument to pull the implant into the place. The procedure results in quick recovery with minimal bruise and swelling.

Lip implants are not attached permanently. They can be removed if a person does not need them any longer.

But why people want lip surgery, the reasons are varied and sometimes even surprising.

“The motivations are very diverse and individual. Some patients want a very natural enhancement. Some want something more dramatic. Some patients actually want a lip reduction, so it spans the entire spectrum.” Houser said.

Some undergo lips surgery to have lips like celebrities have. And the trend is not limited to women. About 1,200 male lip procedures were performed in 2015, indicating a 400 percent increase since 2000.
