BMW Is the Only German Car Brand Offering Clean Diesel Engines

Today the German government released the long awaited report on emissions tests of diesel cars from other brands than VW. The results are devastating.

Volkswagen has settled with the US government that is estimated to cost the German car giant about $18 billion. While Volkswagen gets the most attention it is not the only car brand with dirty diesel engines. The German government released today a long awaited report about emission tests of Diesel cars from all major car brands.

Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Opel alone have to recall 630,000 cars to fix the Diesel engine emissions. It is not just German car makers that are affected. Brands that got named in the report include Ford, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Dacia, Renault, Hyundai and many more. The only major car brand that is missing from the Diesel emissions test report is BMW.

The Bavarian car company has the German word for engine in their brand. The "Bayerischen Motoren Werke" take engines seriously and apparently managed to develop a Diesel engine that is clean and does not require tricks.

Most Diesel engine have an issue staying clean at low temperatures. While other Diesel engine stop the cleaning, the BMW Diesel engines are able to continue cleaning the emissions at lower temperatures according to a BMW spokesperson who talked to Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

BMW is also ready to comply with the discussed upcoming stricter emissions limits. This could widen the advantage of BMW Diesel cars in the near future.

The automobile lobby tried very hard since the Volkswagen scandal broke to try to save Diesel. Now that is clear that most car makers are not able to offer a clean Diesel car, the future of Diesel is in jeopardy. The new test report is also not the final step. More investigations are underway.
