Porsche Macan GTS Delivery Time Puts Tesla Model 3 Release Schedule in Perspective
2017 Macan GTS

Porsche announced the 2017 Macan GTS in October of 2015. The first deliveries just started in the past couple weeks. Ordering a Macan GTS now means a delivery in 2017.

I know I'm late. I just made up my mind two weeks ago to sell my 3-year-old Porsche 911 and get a more "practical" Macan. Comparing the different models it was clear right away that I want a 2017 Macan GTS.

It is the best deal considering the base configuration and the GTS is perfect expression of SUV and sports car. For instance the awesome 20" RS Spyder Design Wheels in Black are standard with the GTS starting at a MSRP of $67,200. The power is slightly below the Turbo, but with 360hp and 159mph top track speed really sufficient.

There are enough reasons to get excited about the 2017 Macan GTS, but the reality struck within minutes of the meeting with the sales associate. The Macan GTS has a delivery time frame of 8 months. This puts my delivery into early 2017 from my mid-April order. This is for Germany. The Macan is made in Leipzig. I am located in the source country. I assume other markets will not have better delivery conditions.

I only had to wait 4 month for my 911 back in 2013. The 8 months are not even guaranteed. It could be longer. Other Macan models have a bit shorter delivery time. The GTS turned out to be wildely popular. Many Porsche customers who had ordered a Macan before the GTS availability have switched their order.

Especially Macan S Diesel orders are getting converted to a GTS. The Diesel scandal, which Porsche is affected as well according to the latest German government test report, pushed customers to drop the Diesel in favor of the GTS. The other reason to switch is the attractive package of the GTS model, which becomes apparent once you fully configured another Macan model.

The Tesla Motors Model 3 delivery schedule does not look that outlandish anymore, when compared to how long Porsche customers have to wait for a delivery of a new Porsche. The Tesla Model 3 reserverations began on March 31. Elon Musk said last week that 400,000 Model 3 reservations have piled up. Delivery of the Model 3 begins late 2017 according to Tesla Motors.

Sure. It takes still about 8 to 10 months longer to wait for a Model 3, but that car is not even finalized. The Model 3 interior is far from done and Tesla is not showing it yet. The production of the Model 3 is supposed to begin in early 2017. There will be another Model 3 event before production begins to reveal the finished car.

The wait for the Tesla Model 3 will be longer for most customers as Tesla will need time produce the 400,000 pre-ordered vehicles. Most Model 3 customers will likely have to wait until late 2018 to receive their car.

I was able to snatch a 1-year-old Macan S to bridge the time until I receive my black Macan GTS. There are worse things.
