The first trailer for Oliver Stone's movie Snowden is here. Joseph Gordon Levitt stars as the former NSA contractor. The movie, which has been highly anticipated by much of the country, is set to hit theaters on September 16, 2016. The movie will also feature Shailene Woodley as Snowden's girlfriend, and Zachary Quinto as the journalist Glenn Greenwald. Nicholas Cage makes a surprise appearance in the trailer, but there is no word on who exactly he will be playing.

The trailer says that the movie is "based on true events," so it is likely there will be some fictionalization of the actual story we all know by now.

Up until now, we've really only seen the teaser for the film, but this trailer makes the long wait even more painful. However, the movie doesn't appear to be the mockumentary type thing that so many were anticipating. Instead, it feels like a spy thriller with a lot of graphics to show off the US government's mass surveillance programs. Stone directs and co-wrote the film, basing on two different books, Guardian journalist Luke Harding's The Snowden Files, and Time of the Octopus by Snowden's Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.

Snowden himself Tweeted about the trailer:
